$7 - ALL AGES - BYOB - BE COOL
Ivy are from the same fertile New York scene as bands like Crazy Spirit, Hank Wood & the Hammerheads, Dawn of Humans, etc., but they aren’t as raw, as frantic, or as hardcore as those bands. In a word, they have everything I love about the current generation of NYC bands, but infused with a catchy, classic punk sensibility. They should have their new 12” on Katorga Works available at the show.
Gay Kiss are the newest band to join the Sorry State Records family. Hailing from Phoenix, Arizona, Gay Kiss are currently on tour with Off! (with whom they’re playing at King’s the night before) and play a nasty, heavy, disjointed, and lurching hybrid of hardcore and noise rock. Like Sorry State faves such as Double Negative or Shoxx, you feel like you’re constantly being blindsided by different waves of noise, but every once in a while you float to the top and catch a destructive, Hoax-esque mosh riff. Even though they’re from clear across the country, Gay Kiss have a very Raleigh sensibility about them and I’m anticipating a total freak-out.
Hopefully you’ve seen Bandages already, but if you haven’t you should know they’re turning left when everyone else is turning right. Heavy but not fast, complex but not over-wrought, Bandages would be Goldilocks’ favorite Raleigh band. The hardest part about watching them is figuring out whether to listen to Sean or Scott.
