These two albums have been my snow day soundtrack... The Stranglers' Black and White and the Sound's All Fall Down. Bands (particularly punk bands) who are underrated because their first album is not their best is a subject about which I can discourse at some length. Like a lot of people, I think, I checked out Rattus Norvegicus because it has a cool cover and is firmly enshrined in the '77 punk canon, but it never clicked. Black and White, however, is just brilliant. It's dense, complex, exuberant... the band can ride a post-punk dirge or bust out a huge singalong like "Tank" with all of the effortless charm of the Exploding Hearts. Can't get enough of this one. As for the Sound, Rich from Whatever Brains introduced them to me about a year ago as "the great lost post-punk band," and boy was he right. Their first album, Jeopardy, is one of the most explosive things I've heard in years, and I was stuck on it for months. I've been digging deeper lately, and their second album, From the Lion's Mouth is great but a bit of a downer a la Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures, but this third album brings it all together. Even though I know Rich hadn't heard this album until a couple of weeks ago, I can't help but be reminded of the surprising arrangements and instrumentation of the 3rd Whatever Brains LP. Like that LP, the 3rd Sound album is never weird or obtuse. Every song here is utterly unique, but also a bona-fide hit. Just jaw-droppingly great. By the way, I just scored a cache of original Sound records on Discogs, so the reissue copies that formerly graced my collection (along with an original of From the Lion's Mouth) will be in the used bin at Sorry State on Friday if anyone's interest is piqued.

If you want something a little harder someone just uploaded the giga-rare Execute flexi to bandcamp along with a bunch of outtakes from the session: 13gravesociety.bandcamp.com/album/doa-001-archiveThis sounds WAY better than any mp3s I've ever heard. I'm guessing it's an official thing.

Man, I've been listening to this Funeral Parade record at Sorry State. It is SO good. Kinda post-punky, but also kinda sounds like the gothier Christian Death or TSOL, but still kinda different. It rules.

Warcollapse - Wandering in Darkness 7" Warcollapse / Disrupt - split 7" (uhh if you haven't read the lyrics while listening to "another angle on angling" on the Disrupt side you probably should...) I didn't start listening to Warcollapse until this year pretty much, I had heard the Defy LP a while ago and it really turned me off. But one day I finally turned the Disrupt split over and listened to the Warcollapse side and thoroughly enjoyed it.
DISSENSION - STAGNATION 7" PETER MANGALORE - DECAY OF THE IRON MAN 5" ^^if you like hardcore and have not heard these two records yer ears are in for a treat. (They are not DIS-BEAT, just so you know)
